Cryomotive GmbH develops hydrogen storage & refueling technology for fuel cell trucks

On January 31, 2022: Cryomotive GmbH announced the collaboration with MAN Truck & Bus, a Germany-based commercial vehicle manufacturer, and Clean Logistics, a Germany-based truck and bus retrofitter, for the development of high-capacity cryogenic hydrogen gas storage systems with fast refueling technology for commercial vehicles. The company aims to achieve a range of 1,000 km on a single tank refill and a refueling time of about 10 minutes.

German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) sent a letter to the CryoTRUCK consortium on January 1, 2022, to fund this development. According to the consortium, the project is three-and-a-half-year with a total budget of more than euro 25 million (~USD 28 million). The company will develop the first generation of a storage and refueling system for cryogenic compressed hydrogen gas (CRYOGAS).

Liquid and gaseous hydrogen are the major sources of high-density cryogenic compressed CRYOGAS, an extremely cold compressed gas. The mission of the project is to showcase the application of CRYOGAS technology in long-haul commercial vehicles. The company also aims to launch a CRYOGAS hydrogen tank with an 80 kg hydrogen storage capacity and an energy content of more than 2,600 kWh. It has to be tested in two different truck models in body and drive.

Federal Minister for Digital and Transport stated that “With alternative drives and fuels, we want to achieve zero-emission logistics on the road. Around 90 percent of the CO2 emissions in the transport sector refer to road traffic, with trucks accounting for a third. The development and testing of hydrogen gas tanks and refueling systems for fuel cell trucks in long-haul transport are a valid and important step for more climate protection in transport”.
